Summary OSS Camp Summer Edition - June 2008

This OSS summer camp held in India Social Institute, Lodhi Road Delhi
Though this time i noticed campers are less a bit. But there are lots of quality presentations this time in web domain.
camp started with REVOLUTION LINUX movie more than 1 hour length movie.
but we cut it down as we dont have much time to watch it fully.

After refreshments prateek started with
Blueprint CSS (contains lots of css rules already specified to give a web page cross browser consistent look),

Drafter Js (the guy named Prateek he is in 12th now ... coded this one in prototype - to quickly create your mock layouts that helps a lot for web designer specially)
started web design from 7th he is in 12th now. He told to me.

CSS Specificity (by Manu@Sapient... ) -> Most valuable for me
http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk/archives/css_specificity_wars.html
thanks manu man

Pratul helps us to identify and add a light on our needs and goals to opt for which linux distro.
It was nice one too claps...claps.

then
“Rails - The best track for your start-up’s Joyride”
by Prateek Saxena

i was impressed by the pics used in presenation as background.. i was guessing that he has used flickr.
which was confirmed when he shown the flickr links at the end of his presentation.

The rail demo was again a nice one ..lots of plugins available..learn as you code or practice with ruby..But PRATEEK has also given a warning to us That HE IS STILL NOOB in ruby.

With Ruby he build a product selling site (basic operations) with in 2 non stop days.
with the help of ruby script supporting c - create,r - read ,u -update, d - delete operation that is crude.

CakePHP also has this script too.. but he haven't use it till date. CakePHP is also inspired from ruby on rails.

The demo he shown comply of smart scripts and modules .. few lines of code type and go ..Zap the site is ready. May be there are lots of issue that pops up when you really working on your live project but the demo he shown to us it was looking fun, magic - automated ..Zap Zap.

And how can i forget INGRES (by Tennyson Kaniampady) database a powerful db open source alternative to mysql and more robust and more accustomed to deal with terabytes of data.
Now this INGRES's company also focusing on its publicity ..lots of other IT product too may be in thousand
since its open source the company want to kick it in Open Source - The Open Source Intro
still its does lack the ingres - community... as it was closed product for may years.

Mr Tennyson Kaniampady has shown a lot of clients list to assure us its security, stability and robustness and 24X7 support etc..etc
(etc can never ends as we are HOMO SAPIENS ;) gimme More n More :D )

After lunch we had time.. as our some campers were still in Eatopia finishing there lunch or may be they were busy in community building meeting for oss camp via Drupal.

Here comes the Vivek Khurana sitting on the chair..long hairs falling down..
i have heard of the guy... in the last oss camp near Rithala from the camper's mouth i.e. Nizam. But he was n't there at that time in last camp.

His long hairs imagined me of that he is a hacker when he asked how many people can write a program in embedded language of "Hello World" and first he asked how many languages you can write "Hello World" program.
But seen him first time he was sitting like a teacher teaching students insisting them to perform and start lightning charge 5 minutes talk or share the knowledge among campers".

As well as he was showing himself as senior and also expecting a gur ji kinda respect from us. Probably this works from him.

Well dont take personal and annoying if you read this mr. khurana :D i got weird imagination i am doing all the analysis+imagination kinda thing right from the college..lots of funny tales to tell btw ;)

so one guy I don't know his name he stand up and give a 5 minute blazing talk.

I also wanted to give a small talk probably on blender fluids but again 5 minutes
ofcourse less for me and this time i feel time shortage through out the OSS CAMP.
Can be confirmed through May be in - Are you presenting ? column.

Nizam given a small - brief demo on python and one thing pratul did in between
by adding few lines of code to create faster GUI..its full proof or not across platform cant say.
But worked as magic - Nice frame - hello world and Shut up Button. i was thinking might be shut up button will actually close the window.. may be some automagic code to close the application too...kidding ;)

But again that was Code as you type - blazing python speed really hissing a lot ;)

I always look for GUI based python program may be that it requires you to use get start with Wx-Python too or alternatives are there told by Pratul but i am forgotten now :D

After that we need to leave the room at 5'0 clock as it was 5:30 P.M. so we said Good bye to our friends.
Wait for Next Oss Camp

this time there was going to be a Blender revisited sessions but the guy Ravish.. dont know why he has not come ?? i was waiting for Blender revisited session too..other volunteers were absent too..

I feel that lots of people had registered for camp. But few there..
Emmm..Human Nature
"Kon jaye yaar neeed aari rahi hei sone do yaar or I need to go or I am with my GF cant come :P"

Anyways there was lot of fun, Open source knowledge sharing, new guys volunteering.
Feels Good ..VINEET GREAT JOB ..Campers GREAT JOB WELL DONE.

Check the pics on picassa

Why are you using Internet explorer ?

I want to ask you people Why you are using Internet explorer ?.

Do you like a browser
full of
security threats,
viruses spyware friendly,
pretty slow and
having an idiot layout engine ?

If you like then you can continue using Internet Explorer ... Please dont read further you are wasting your time and if you want to waste the time... you can ;)

Most of the browsers Firefox, Opera, Safari render a page fine ... but i am sure you will be seeing the page (with CSS) behaving notoriously in Internet Explorer (to web designers)... though keep web designers keep on fixing these issues using IE hacks...etc etc...for a consistent look n feel to viewers.

IE comes shipped with XP a standard browsers for windows.... but still not following the specifications ... may be it is made to be behaved like that as others browsers are a bit new..still they render a page nicely and according to specifications and What happened to you ??

Still you failed in acid test [test-suites for web-browsers]

Microsoft has to lose this WAR

But please not Internet explorer...
SAVE YOURSELF 'N' LIFE.

Do you know that Mozilla Firefox is aiming for Guinness World Record by

Bliss Wallpaper Windows XP

I thought its better to share it with you people about the this very well known XP wallpaper BLISS

BMP image produced from a photograph of a landscape in Napa County, California, east of Sonoma Valley.
It is so named because it contains rolling green hills and a blue sky with stratocumulus and cirrus clouds. The image is used as the default computer wallpaper for the "Luna" theme, which is included with Microsoft Windows XP.

The photograph was taken by the professional photographer Charles O'Rear, a resident of St. Helena, Napa County, for digital-design company HighTurn. O'Rear has also taken photographs for Bill Gates' private Seattle stock photography company Corbis and Napa Valley photographs for the May 1979 National Geographic Magazine article Napa, Valley of the Vine.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2008

I am bit excited to know this

"The first ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia opens in Singapore on 10 December 2008. "
SIGGRAPH Asia 2008

Yeeyy...Siggy in Asia too
But wonder if i can go there :P this time

Well a bit on info who are not familiar with Siggraph (gathered from wikipedia : siggraph)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIGGRAPH (short for Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques) is the name of the annual conference on computer graphics (CG) convened by the ACM SIGGRAPH organization.
The first SIGGRAPH conference was in 1974.

Some highlights of the conference are its Animation Theater and Electronic Theater presentations, where recently created CG films are played. There is a large exhibition floor, where several hundred companies set up elaborate booths and compete for attention and recruits.

Most of the companies are in the engineering, graphics, motion picture, or video game industries. There are also many booths for schools which specialize in computer graphics or interactivity. Dozens of research papers are presented each year, and SIGGRAPH is widely considered the most prestigious forum for the publication of computer graphics research.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In short Siggraph is like a Big Multimedia fair where company showcases there products.. research papers....and advancement in multimedia technologies. That are adopted by the market if they have right potential to stay. And we soon see them in our daily lives or in movies, games too.
If you wish you can take a look at Siggraph research papers collected by
Tim Rowley and Ke-Sen Huang
http://trowley.org/
if you are not satisfied with it...you can do googling too
